Tom Gibson is a singer and songwriter from Staybridge breaking his way into the industry, releasing his EP this month and headlining Band on the Wall, Manchester.
I sat down with Tom to talk about his music and why he’s pursuing a career in music…

Tom Gibson has been playing guitar since he was six and singing for two, writing his own music such as songs ‘Like the Movies’ and ‘Not Right For You’. Tom stated that the music he writes is “very influenced by rock music and blues music” and is describes it as “soft pop”.
“I used to do a lot of sport and as much as I loved it, there was still something missing and my guitar and music was always in the background.
I’d alway it’s revert back to my guitar and just thought that’s where my real passion is and what I want to do”, Tom stated, describing it as “so much fun, it never feels like work”.

“Without challenges, there’s no point doing it”.
His work is very influenced by John Mayor, showing similar styles within their voices and guitar styles, and people sometimes tell Gibson that he reminds them of Mayor.
When writing his songs, Tom links back to past emotions and experiences, making his meaningful to him and something that I think everyone can connect too.
“At home I’ve got a few guitars and I used to sit in my bedroom and cover songs but now I’ve started writing my own stuff. I start with the guitar and the actual music, and if something comes instantly then I know I’m onto something, but if nothing comes I just think, ‘Maybe I should leave it for today’.
It’s strange, you can’t rush song writing. Harry Styles said it in an interview that it’s like a surfer. You’re either on the board and the wave doesn’t come, or you’re on the board and the wave does come, which is the same with songwriting.
I’ve written songs that are just throw away lyrics but I have wrote most of my songs from past experiences, relationships, and people I’ve met. I’ve wrote a song when I was on the bus once and it’s literally about being on the bus and how society is corporate machines”.

One of Tom’s earlier songs is ‘Friend of Yours’, which is the second song that Tom wrote.

“It’s about staying friends after a relationship, which can happen these days because we’re living in a more accepting modern world but somethings it’s quite difficult”.
Tom supported Cassia at Manchester Cathedral where he played to around 400 people which he believes is his “biggest achievement”.
“The atmosphere was great, the gig went great, and it was just really good”.

When asked in 10 years from now, where do you want to be/see yourself, Tom said, “With my music career, I would like to work as the likes of Stevie Wonder or Elton John, who are musical legends. So in 10 years I would like to have a lot more studio albums out.
I just want to be able to look back and think ‘Wow I’ve made the most of it and I’ve enjoyed my life with music’ but I’ve a lot more to go”.

Gibsons EP ‘Eternity’ is coming out this month and is made up of three tracks, with ‘Eternity’ being the main track. “They’re the three tracks that people enjoy most live and they’re my three favourite songs I’ve written.
Up to know it sounds really good in the studio musically and the plan is to just get it out there, get some cds printed so then it will be on Spotify as well and I might get some vinyls done too”.
Tom Gibson’s next gig is at Band on the Wall, Manchester, on 18th April 2020, where he is headlining the show. Tickets are £8.50 and are still available.

There are two support acts which are yet to be announced, followed by Tom’s performance which includes a backing band as well so “what you hear on the recordings is what you’re going to ear, but you can experience it live”.
